Choosing & Caring for Your Deck

The best deck is the one that speaks to you. If you're a beginner, the Rider-Waite-Smith is the strongest choice — nearly every tarot book, course, and guide uses it as a reference. The illustrated scenes on each card make interpretation intuitive.

What to Look For

  • Illustrated pips — Does the 5 of Cups show a scene, or just five cups? Scenes help beginners read intuitively.
  • Art that resonates — You'll spend a lot of time with these images. Choose art you genuinely like.
  • Standard sizing — Easier to shuffle and handle.

Caring for Your Deck

Many readers develop personal rituals around their decks. None of these are required — but they can deepen your relationship with the cards:

  • Store your deck in a cloth bag or wooden box
  • Keep a clear quartz crystal on top to "cleanse" the energy
  • Knock on the deck three times before shuffling to clear previous readings
  • Sleep with a new deck under your pillow for a few nights to "bond" with it

These are traditions, not rules. Do what feels meaningful to you.
